December 6 2005 Psalm 104

December 6, 2005                                             Psalm 104

Psalm 104:1, 35 “Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty…Bless the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD!”

Sometimes, I think we read scripture, but never really read it.  What I mean is we look at the words without letting them penetrate our subconscious or open our eyes and our hearts to the message that the writer is trying to convey.  Psalm 104 is one of those.

I don’t know how many times I’ve read or heard this psalm and never really paid attention to it.  I now wish I had.  The writer gives us an excellent model for rejoicing before God!

Just look around your house today.  Note all the books you have on a bookshelf and give thanks to God for everything that went into printing just one of them.  The creation of the world, the rain that nurtured the forest, the trees that grew, the lumberjacks who felled the trees, the paper mill, etc.. That is what the writer of this psalm does for us and it is a model of how complete our thanks to God should be each day!

Perhaps, the next time we feel blue or low we might step back and look at one room of our home or office. Then stop and give thanks to God for everything God did to make that office or room possible.  I imagine when we start, we too will be saying, “Bless the Lord, o my soul!”

Gracious Lord, the scope of all you have done and continue to do for us boggles the mind.  As we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Messiah, we pray that we never lose our sense of awe and wonder at your works.  Amen.
