Psalm 3:5 “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.”

In reading this Psalm I started thinking about what a bad day this must have felt like to David.  To quote a popular children’s book, it was “a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.”   I’m sure each of us has had one of “those days or weeks” when everything seems to go wrong. Probably not in the magnitude of David, but to our senses each little thing adds up to frayed nerves, exhaustion, and feelings of helplessness.

For example, you get a flat tire on the way to work leading to being late for a very important meeting.  Then your doctor calls that your cholesterol is up and you are admonished to change your eating and to exercise more.  That evening your son brings home a note from the teacher about an incident at school.  That night we drop into bed exhausted, wanting sleep and to forget all of it but instead, we lie awake replaying everything over and over.  Like David, we would do better to give these worries and frustrations to God who is our shield.

Our Heavenly Father, you are our protector and comforter and deliverer.  You hear our cries and answer.  You are our source of perfect peace.  Thank you for being our constant companion.  Forgive us when we try to take care of problems on our own.  Help us each day to renew our commitment to dedicate each day to you.  Give us wisdom to work through our daily trials according to your will and for your glory.  In Jesus name we pray.  Amen.
