December 21 2005 2 Pet 1

2 Peter 1:20-21 “First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”

I remember reading once that there are an astounding number of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah.  Some of them we know, “He will be born to a virgin,”  “He will be of the line of David,” and so forth.  The astounding thing for me is that every one of them is fulfilled in Jesus Christ!

It causes me to marvel, again and again, at the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of all the prophets of the Old Testament.  Little did Isaiah and some of the others know, that their visions of the Redeemer God would send would come true.  Just not in the way they expected it to happen.

Israel expected the Messiah to be a King like David, one who would overthrow their earthly enemies. But that was not the case.  We, who have the witness of Peter and others, know that the King of kings came to us as the child of a carpenter and his young bride, born in a stable in Bethlehem.

And who would have believed that the Messiah would die on a cross, like some common criminal.  Or that even now, 2000 years later, people would still look back on his life and times, finding new revelations of God’s love.  Learning once again the power of God to change hearts and minds!

Thank you, Lord for the gift of your Holy Spirit.  We pray that you continue to guide men and women through all the ages that we may recognize the prophecies of Scripture and take them to heart in our lives.  We ask this in the name of your precious Son, Christ the Lord.  Amen.
