Psalm 145:14-21 “The LORD upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.  The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand, satisfying the desire of every living thing. The LORD is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings. The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of all who fear him; he also hears their cry, and saves them. The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD, and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.”

This time of year many of the lectionary passages for Sunday lead us to recall the coming of the infant Christ.  Occasionally, we need to be reminded of the message of God, prior to Christ’s birth, for it is a message that Jesus lived in his short span of days as one of us.  And that is total dependence upon God, and total compassion for others.

In the Christmas season, charitable organizations find their coffers and shelves filled to overflowing as we remember the message of God in a command to care for the “least of these.”  But God’s command is not just for the months of November, December, and January.  It is a command for the other nine months of the year as well.

If, as many are prone to proclaim, “God is good all the time,” then we too have a compelling reason to hear and respond to the voices of those who call on the Lord from their pain and suffering.

Perhaps, God is waiting to use us as the instrument to uphold those who are falling and to raise up those who are bowed down.  Then, like Mother Teresa and others, we too will speak the praise of the Lord and the day will come when all flesh blesses his name forever.

Blessed Lord, we see what you have done to help the downtrodden throughout history.  Create in each of us a heart filled with compassion for others, that we too might lift them and show them the majesty and wonder that is your love.  This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.
